New Recipe: Last minute Easter activity ideas for kids

Easter is one of my favorite holidays, and this year its symbolism could not be more timely. Whether you are a religious person observing, an Easter Bunny devotee or a combination of both, themes of rebirth and renewal offer a refreshing change of pace after the year we’ve all just experienced. Let’s celebrate early with some easy Easter activities that you can create with your little one. Already finished your egg decorating? No worries. From downloading Easter-themed coloring and craft printables to learning a new song, there are plenty of ways to celebrate the Easter holiday in a meaningful way this week.

Now, here’s something that I routinely have to remind myself, and maybe you do, too. We have a lot on our plates, mamas. Don’t feel obligated to make sure you’re cramming in a certain amount of activities because it’s a holiday and you feel like it’s expected. And don’t worry about getting things perfect (they never will be). Plan as much or as little as you can, and keep things simple. At the end of the day, your child just wants to spend time with you, whether you’re doing an arts and crafts project or not. Think about what Easter means to you, remember your own childhood memories, and go from there. And oh yeah, have fun!

Homan at Home

When in doubt, cupcakes! Baking with kids can be a lot of fun, despite the mess that inevitably occurs. I found Life Love and Sugar to have a delicious looking vanilla cupcake recipe, and I also love the Easter cupcake decoration ideas found on Homan at Home. Marshmallows make very cute bunny ears; who knew?

Bingo is an easy and fun game for little ones to learn, and I love that it’s an activity which can be adapted to any holiday or special occasion. Check out Crazy Little Projects, who created an adorable free Easter-themed Bingo printable on her website.

Bring art outdoors

If it’s warm enough where you live, try hitting the driveway or sidewalk for a little Easter-themed chalk art decorating. From Easter crosses for the religious to bunnies, ducks and Easter eggs, there are plenty of ways to brighten up your walk and get everyone in the mood for celebrating on Easter morning. Pretending to be a bunny while you play hopscotch would be fun, too.

Try an Easter egg collage craft

Collage can be an entertaining sensory activity for toddlers. I love the Easter egg collage project idea on Toddler Approved, which uses materials found around the house (or easily purchased at the dollar store or Target’s $1 dollar bins).

Play a new game

Game night just became Easter-themed with this Bunny Hop memory game that looks a whole lot like Mr. MacGregor’s garden. Perfect for age 4+, this award-winning preschool game encourages kids to think fast, recognize colors and remember which of their bunnies pop up and which stay put.

Read Easter-themed books

Guess what? Storytime counts as an activity, especially if the idea of a toddler painting project gives you the hives (I understand, believe me). Check out some Easter-themed books from the library and snuggle up for storytime with your little one. My personal favorite is The Country Bunny and The Little Gold Shoes, by Du Bose Heyward, about a hard working mama of 21 baby bunnies who becomes the Easter Bunny in spite of her many responsibilities. Feminist and Easter-themed? I love it.

Learn a new song

Is there a better time to introduce ‘Here Comes Peter Cottontail’? I’m just warning you, this tune is a bit of an earworm.
