JACKSON COUNTY, MI – You’ll find cold treats and hot eats at Frosty Foods in Horton.
The eatery, known best for it’s ice-cream, opened in the 1980s as Frosty King. Current owner Rick Gorzen, who took over in 2020, renamed it to Frosty Foods, said Dustin Preston, supervisor and Gorzen’s son.

“The main question people want to know is why did we change the name to Frosty Foods. It was because we wanted to implement more foods,” Preston said. “It was really known for just ice cream, and we wanted to implement more.”
The small ice cream shop is known mainly for its ice cream, especially its hard ice cream, he said. The store sells a variety of flavors, but the most popular is the “Michigan Pothole,” which comes with thick black fudge on chocolate ice cream and chunks of chocolate.
Additionally, soft-serve ice cream is popular. Frosty Foods offers a different flavor each week, such as peanut butter, tangerine or butterscotch. Sundaes, shakes and malts can also be found at Frosty Foods.
“It’s what every ice cream place would pretty much have,” Preston said.
In addition to the cold items, though, hot pretzels, cheese sticks, mac and cheese bites and Coney dogs are available and extremely popular, Preston said.
With the eatery being located in a small community, staff and the owners have a close relationship with the customers, Preston said. Additionally, staff is friendly and hard working, even when there is a long line out the door.
Frosty Foods, 7434 Moscow Road, is currently open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. During the summer it’s open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
