New Recipe: ‘My Brain Was On Fire’

The Pioneer Woman star Ree Drummond isn’t afraid to try new things. The Food Network chef has been cooking for years, and her sense of adventure seems to only grow with time. However, her adventurous spirit once got the best of her while on vacation; she ate one food that left her scarred.

‘The Pioneer Woman’ star Ree Drummond has always had a sense of adventure

Drummond was born and raised in Oklahoma, but she never wanted to settle down there. She left the land-locked state to attend college in California. Upon graduating, Drummond still wasn’t ready to settle back into her Oklahoma roots; she made plans to attend law school in Chicago and has always considered herself more of a city girl.

However, those plans changed when she met Ladd Drummond, and her love for him caused her to settle down in her home state. Even after becoming The Pioneer Woman, though, Drummond has continued taking on new adventures. She opened her home goods store and restaurant, The Mercantile, in 2016, and she’s since launched a bed and breakfast and a successful magazine.

Ree Drummond didn’t have the best experience in a hot sauce store   

When it comes to trying new foods, Drummond is also adventurous. But her lively attitude once got the best of her while on a trip to New Orleans with her family. In an interview with TODAY’s Savannah Guthrie, Drummond was asked the spiciest food she’d ever eaten — and she responded with quite a tale.

“I went to New Orleans with my husband and our daughter, Paige, and I went to one of those hot sauce shops,” she said. “I looked at the woman behind the counter and I said, ‘Take me you your hottest.’ … I dipped a big piece of the [chip] corner and popped it in my mouth.”

Drummond’s reaction to the sauce is one she’ll never forget, as she instantly started sweating. “It was an hour later, and my brow was finally drying off … I just couldn’t think for an hour of my life … My brain was on fire,” she said. Needless to say, it was her first and last time trying the sauce.

Still, Drummond does love to cook spicy foods. She often features Tex-Mex cuisine on her show and loves to toss in a fresh pepper here and there.

Ree Drummond stays away from one other food, too

Though Drummond likely won’t be trying the hottest hot sauce again, it’s not the only food she steers away from. Drummond also can’t stand bananas, and she essentially refuses to cook with them.

“I don’t like bananas. I like to drive that point home,” Drummond once told Design & Living Magazine, according to TODAY. However, Drummond did put her differences with bananas aside to create a banana bread recipe back in 2009, as well as a bananas foster recipe in 2011. Still, you won’t see her making such a dish too often. “I hate, abhor, loathe, and recoil at the sight of bananas,” she once wrote on her Pioneer Woman blog.
