Remember getting candy floss from the fair as a kid?

Wonderlust dessert shop on Christchurch’s High St is bringing that memory back. The shop opened last week with staff hoping its liquid nitrogen icecream and crazy floss sticks will take off.

The use of liquid nitrogen in icecream results in the cream freezing quicker without the use of whipping. As a result, the icecream is smoother and silkier than regular icecream if executed properly. The process is sped up by the use of liquid nitrogen, and as a result, the lack of air means a more intense flavour.

The crazy floss sticks are the shop’s version of candy floss in unique flavours – with this week’s options including apple, watermelon, unicorn dreams, pina colada and the classic pink vanilla.

The liquid nitrogen icecream is the first of its kind in the city. The shop promises icecream using billowing clouds of liquid nitrogen in front of you – providing something sweet for both the eyes and tastebuds.

The flavours are ever-changing with combinations weird, wonderful and worth getting brain freeze for.

The flavour of the day on Monday was strawberry with basil and olive oil snow and balsamic.

Co-owner Nikki Eaton said there were a wide range of desserts on offer, but she recommended the lemon meringue pie in particular.

If icecream or candy floss isn’t your bag, the shop has a range of other treats to pique your interest.

These include keto bombs, chocolates, icecream sandwiches, dessert pops, cakes, loaded brownies and more. The selection changes regularly.

Eaton said the team hoped to have an “opening party” once the red traffic light system restrictions eased, after their soft opening last week to avoid any large queues.

Wonderlust’s crazy floss sticks have been a big hit since the shop opened last week.

However, she did not think Covid-19 restrictions would affect the business.

“You can’t put your life on hold to wait for these things.”

The dessert bar is open Wednesday to Sundays from 11am to late, so customers can pop in on their lunch break, after work or after dinner for their sweet fix.

It also has gender reveal glitter bomb packs available on its website and offers vegan and gluten-free options on some products.
