These Old Fashioned Donuts are such a classic at our house, especially for New Year’s parties! My grandmother taught me her donut recipe. These are cake donuts because they are not made with yeast! They are fluffy and cakey. We love to eat them with a little powdered sugar!
I made an instructional recipe video if you are interested or if you are more of a visual kind to understand 😉 [Old-Fashioned Donut](https://youtu.be/pk8GpIf6Dqk)
1. *Whisk the eggs and the sugar together until they are super fluffy and light (you can do this step with a hand mixer)*
2. Add the melted butter and vanilla
3. Mix the flour(480g) and baking powder together
4. Put a third of your flour into the egg mixture
5. Mix until it’s almost fully incorporated
6. Add half of the milk
7. Then add another third of the flour
8. Add the leftover milk
9. Finish with the flour
10. When you have finished mixing, the dough should still, be sticky but it should still come together ( you don’t want it runny)
11. At this point, you can add flour until you are satisfied with the texture
12. Wrap it up and refrigerate at least 30minutes
Step 2- Cutting the Donuts
1. Take the dough out of the refrigerator and you should see that it is not so sticky anymore
2. Roll it out on the counter
3. Use a cookie cutter to cut circles out of the dough
4. Use a very small cookie cutter ( we use the cap of a small bottle) to cut out the donut hole
5. You can reroll the extra dough
6. Place all the donuts on a baking tray and all the holes in a bowl for later
Step 3 – Frying
1. Put the shortening in a saucepan
2. Heat it until it reaches 350°F
3. Then put a couple of donuts in it to fry
4. After about 40seconds it should be golden enough to flip them on the other side
5. Wait another 30-40seconds and take them out
6. Place them on a cooling rack with paper towels under it so the shortening drips off
7. Do the same with all the other donuts!
8. Wait for them to cool down ( or don’t 😉 ) and enjoy!
9. You can freeze them if you don’t want to eat them right away!
